Assistant Professor: United Arab Emirates University

The Department of Translation Studies at the United Arab Emirates University invites applications for a position of Assistant in Translation Studies to commence in August 2017, subject to final budget approval.

The position would suit an applicant with a specialization in Translation Studies and experience in teaching translation. Specialization in legal translation/interpreting, conference interpreting, audio-visual translation, or computer assisted translation is a plus.

Duties include teaching undergraduate level translation courses and some General Education courses within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences; engaging in research; supervising student research projects; advising students, and serving on committees. The teaching load is normally 12 credit hours (four courses) per semester.

Compensation includes competitive salary, free housing off-campus, a comprehensive health plan, education allowance for children, annual return travel to home destination, and an end-of-service gratuity.

The UAE University is the largest and most comprehensive federal university in the UAE. It has approximately 14,000 students, 800 faculty members and offers well over 70 programs at all levels through nine colleges, of which the College of Humanities and Social Sciences is the largest.

The University boasts a newly built campus, equipped with state of the art educational technology in all classrooms and laboratories. The city of Al Ain, where the university is located, is often described as a garden city of palm trees, grassy parks and low-rise buildings set in the mountainous inland region of the UAE. Al Ain is a very safe and clean city with a cosmopolitan population. The larger cities of Abu Dhabi and Dubai are an easy 1.5-hour drive on modern highways.

The successful candidate will ideally have:

• A Ph.D. in Translation Studies from an accredited Western university.
• A minimum of 3 years of teaching experience at university level.
• A good record of refereed publications in Translation Studies or a related field like Linguistics and Translation or Cross-cultural Communication and Translation.
• Native or near-native proficiency in English and Arabic is a must.
• Three years of experience in professional translation and/or interpreting.
• Excellent computer skills. Knowledge of educational technologies is a plus.

An ability to teach some or all of the following courses would be an advantage: interpreting (simultaneous and/or consecutive), legal translation, medical translation, audio-visual translation, and translation technology.

The Division of Science at NYU Abu Dhabi is searching for accomplished visiting faculty in Mathematics to educate the next generation of global thinkers. Faculty have access to state-of-the-art core facilities that include robotics and high-performance computing facilities with more than 6,400 computing cores and a peak performance of 70 TFLOPS.
