The Animal Health and Welfare Director plays a pivotal role in driving the comprehensive animal health and welfare program. This encompasses the zoo's diverse animal population, including mammals, fish, reptiles, birds, and invertebrates. The successful candidate will also provide support for associated Rescue & Rehabilitation initiatives.
This position is instrumental in upholding the facility's high animal welfare standards and advancing the science of animal health. As a key member of the Strategic Operations Management Office, the Director will oversee the management of the animal welfare program and lead a high-performing team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintenance and management of all aspects of collection animal health, including disease diagnosis and treatment, preventative medicine programs, animal welfare, and nutrition.
- Overseeing medical care for rescued animals as part of various programs.
- Leading the Animal Health Department's annual budget.
- Collaborating with the Zoological team to manage the animal rescue program.
- Consulting and educating colleagues on health, welfare, and husbandry best practices.
- Conducting animal health research projects and presenting results for presentations and publications.
- Providing strategic direction and contributing to short- and long-term plans and goals for the Animal Health and Welfare department.
- Developing and updating colleague resources and plans for the team.
- Planning and developing the Animal Health and Welfare department's annual operating budget in coordination with the Zoological husbandry team.
- Developing and maintaining safety protocols to ensure a safe working environment.
- Assisting in field rescues, health assessments, and research with various species.
- Participating in developing long-range goals and objectives, including capital planning.
- Investigating and addressing noncompliance and safety-related incidents in conjunction with HSE and HR.
- Monitoring key results and financial performance for assigned areas.
- Formulating and administering department policies as needed.
- Performing other duties as assigned by leadership.
Minimum Qualifications, Experience, and Skills Requirements
Essential Qualifications:
- Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine degree.
- Master's Degree or postgraduate qualification in Veterinary Medicine.
- Able to obtain a license to practice veterinary medicine in the UAE.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Board eligibility, Member or Diplomat status of a recognized Veterinary statutory/professional body.
Years of Experience — Essential:
- 10 years of employment experience in a Zoo, Aquarium, or Oceanarium Organization (including Post-doctoral training or 2 years of full-time practical experience).
- 10 years of experience in a leadership role.
- 10 years of experience in zoological budget development and oversight.
Skills — Essential:
- Strong leadership, communication, and teamwork skills.
- Critical thinking, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated knowledge of professional zoo/aquarium and animal behavior/conservation communities.
- Advanced computer skills, including MS Office applications.

Role Overview
The role is responsible for providing high-quality care to animals under the supervision of the Head of Veterinary Hospital. - Prescribe medications, perform surgeries, prepare health certificates, and review animal diets and schedules.
- Support conservation efforts through in-situ and ex-situ captive breeding programs at Dubai Safari Park.
- Supervise and perform sedation, anesthesia, and all surgical activities within the park.
Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in veterinary medicine.
Experience: Minimum 5 years in a zoological setting with exotic animals.
Skills:
- Strong knowledge of animal anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
