Role Summary
The Animal Care Specialist position participates in the husbandry and training of the animal collection, including the maintenance of exhibit area, preparation of diets/animal feeding and the set-up and maintenance of presentation areas.
ROLE PROFILE
- Monitors and maintains all aspects of animal habitat including air and water quality.
- Participates in daily animal encounter and educational programs.
- Presents the animals in an interactive and educational manner.
- Observe animals for signs of stress or illness.
- Ensure all data is recorded in a professional manner using the database provided.
- Ensures all animal areas are kept clean and free of bacterial and fungal growth, including participate in regular scuba diving maintenance on exhibit.
- Willing to work in varying shifts based on business needs, including opening, mid, and closing shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays .
- Bachelor's degree in Biology or Zoology or related field or equivalent experience.
- 2 years of animal training experience, preferably with the care of marine animals.
- Experience in a zoo or aquarium performing daily operations like exhibit maintenance, food preparation and guest experiences.
- Experience in following and implementing AZA zoo and aquarium standards and procedures.
- Open water dive certificate.
- Basic knowledge of training techniques and measuring animal welfare.
