The Research Chemist is a critical role that entails conducting comprehensive laboratory tests and inspections to guarantee the quality of materials. This position requires an in-depth understanding of chemistry, materials science, and laboratory procedures, as well as exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
Main Responsibilities- Conduct visual and measurement tests on sample materials to confirm specifications.
- Analyze test results to achieve targeted processes and make recommendations for improvements.
- Perform wet and dry film thickness checks, density, viscosity, drying time, and other chemical specifications testing.
- Prepare reports for inspection and test data, ensuring accurate and timely documentation.
- Evaluate adhesion and penetration testing, visual checks after blasting, and impact testing results.
- Test physical properties of materials, such as durability against abrasion, adhesiveness, and color.
- Benchmark market materials against tested materials and evaluate methods and processes for production.
- Assist in developing policies and procedures to maintain ISO certification.
- Verify special inspection and material testing performed by third parties.
- Evaluate methods and processes of production and suggest improvements.
- Perform inspections, measurements, and tests according to sampling plan and procedures.
- Communicate and enforce laboratory safety rules to internal and external researchers.
- Test and inspect sample materials or products for defects and deviations from specifications.
- Follow laboratory procedure and SOPs regarding scope of work.
- Take leadership in ensuring safe systems of work and conditions within area of responsibility.
- Bachelor of Sciences (B.S.) or Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, or related field.
- Five+ years of laboratory experience.
- Experience with laboratory instrumentation operation, troubleshooting, and test methods.
- Method development and validation experience required.
- Familiarity with product development cycle a plus.
- Effective interpersonal, self-motivation skills, and ability to interact with all levels of personnel.
- Ability to work under pressure.

The Center for Sand Hazards and Opportunities in Resilience Energy and Sustainability at New York University Abu Dhabi seeks to recruit one or more motivated postdoctoral associates to work on cutting-edge research in the area of resilient concrete structures.
- Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) mix development, material characterization, structural design, and precast applications are areas of interest.
- Structural 3D Printing (metals, concrete, and composites) at multiple scales is also a priority.
- Soil–structure interaction and resilient foundation systems will be explored through Small-scale Structural Centrifuge Testing and physical modeling.
- Advanced Instrumentation and experimental simulation will be utilized to drive innovation in this field.
Successful candidates must hold a PhD degree in Civil, Structural, Mechanical, or Material Engineering. Other related fields such as Nuclear Engineering, Material Science, etc., are also welcome.
Required qualifications include: strong communication and presentation skills; a track record in writing and publishing peer-reviewed journal publications; and previous or relevant experience in mentoring or supervising undergraduate student research or junior graduate students.
A formal training, education, or certification in a secondary area (beyond the main PhD focus) such as additive manufacturing, 3D Concrete Printing , soil–structure interaction, centrifuge testing, etc., is a plus. Other preferred qualifications include: expertise in laboratory and multiscale experimental testing (at material component and structural levels), 3D Printing and physical modeling for structural and geotechnical applications; programming and coding (preferably using Python and C) along with GUI and simple computational tool development.
Candidates will work in a multidisciplinary environment consisting of PhD-level scientists and undergraduate students; conduct high-quality, innovative, and independent experimental, analytical, and/or computational research; publish research work and results in scientific peer-reviewed journals and conferences; mentor undergraduate students; and participate in writing research grant proposals.
