Job Purpose:
Assist teachers in their work as directed. Teaching assistants will be asked to assist with a range of tasks on a regular basis.
Job Scope:
Have the authority to supervise small groups of children or whole classes of children in an emergency situation, or when specifically requested to do so by the Principal or Senior Management Team. Teaching assistants are fully insured to supervise groups of children inside and outside the classrooms.
Internal & External Interactions:
Teachers, school staff and management, pupils, parents.
Key Accountabilities:
Embrace and encourage the ethos and standards of excellence as defined in the GEMS Core Values.
Assist the teacher with reading related activities.
Run small group activities inside or outside the classroom as directed by the teacher.
Prepare and tidy up classroom activities. Mount work displays and assist with preparation of displays.
Photocopy documents and assist with preparation of worksheets etc as requested.
Responsible for covering class for short periods of time in emergency situations.
Tidy and rearrange stock cupboards and distribute new stock.
Take children to toilet and change/clean them when necessary.
Develop familiarity with relevant aspects of the curriculum eg literacy,
numeracy and Phonetics.
Ensure the GEMS policies, procedures, and codes of conduct are followed at
all times.
Initiate effort and energy beyond the typical work day, where the tasks require additional commitment.
Attend staff meetings and serve on committees as required.
Ensure tact, confidentiality and discretion at all times. Maintain confidential information and ensure information pertaining to students and the school is not shared or discussed without the approval of the teacher or senior management team.
Perform other duties as requested by direct & dotted reporting line managers / supervisors.
Skills
Qualifications / knowledge:
Good level of general education especially in Maths and English.
Skills:
Strong communication skills with excellent standard of written and spoken English. ICT skills desirable. Able to handle a range of tasks, work under pressure and relate well to children and colleagues.
Experience:
Previous experience as a teaching assistant or working with children preferred.

A teacher assistant supports the teacher of the class in educating children. An assistant basically handles tasks that free the teacher to focus on the learning agenda for the day. They are responsible for human support and paraprofessional work assisting the teacher with instructional activities and assisting students by reinforcing material already presented through special efforts and repetitions. Assisting teachers in managing, organizing and coordinating all task related to the respective section.

- Collect and display suitable material for educational displays and decorate classrooms and corridors
- Supervise snack and other related duties
- Assist the classroom teacher and accept all duties assigned in support of teaching and learning
- Perform a variety of office assistance tasks such as photocopying, filing, answering the telephone, etc. as required
- Monitor students and maintains order on the bus, including the wearing of seatbelts at all times
- Ensure the safety of each student at all the times
- Check the attendance of the students registered on the bus before departure and at arrival to school
- Inform the teacher / parent about any absences
- Check Bus mobile for instructions from Transport Manager / Coordinator
- Collects/Drop-off KG1 to G2 students from their classrooms
- Manage student behavior on the bus while enroute to/from the school
- Report behavioral issues to the transport manager
- At drop off of student ensure that the student is hand-over to the authorized adult
- Contact parents should the child not be at the collection point
- Conduct checks at the end of every trip and ensure no students or their belongings are left inside the bus.
- Help students enter/exit from the school bus from their authorized adult
