WIF 2023 Academic Research Conference on Investment in Sustainable Development

As a unique international policy and research hub, UNCTAD is delighted to announce the Academic Research Conference on Investment in Sustainable Development at WIF 2023, organized in partnership with the IHEID Centre for Finance and Development, UNU-WIDER, CEPR and NYU Abu Dhabi. To be held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on 16–17 October 2023 during the World Investment Forum 2023 (16–18 October 2023).

The WIF 2023 Academic Research Conference aims to provide a platform for discussions, as well as to integrate research and ideas from leading scholars, researchers, executives from global companies and senior policymakers.

The conference will consist of several thematic sessions over 2 days, a high-level opening session, and a forward-looking closing panel. Leading scholars will run the discussions in core sessions of the WIF, with the objective of creating synergies between academics, and the multi- stakeholder community.

We welcome applications from economists, finance experts, political scientists, international business scholars working on theoretical and empirical areas related to the topic of 'Investment in Sustainable Development'. Work on a wide range of investment and development-related topics is welcome. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Investment in the energy transition
  • Debt and climate change
  • FDI and women empowerment
  • Investment and food security
  • Inequality and growth

Contributions from emerging scholars who are underrepresented in these fields are highly encouraged. Selected funding (for travel) for scholars without other sources of funding will be possibly available.

Since the first WIF in 2008, the World Investment Forum has become the largest global platform for high-level dialogue and action on investment for development and now encompasses more than 100 events on topics spanning the full sustainable investment value chain, from green finance in capital markets to on-the-ground investment facilitation. The last WIF held in 2021 which gathered more than 8,000 participants from 177 countries, also featured a multifaceted academic track. The 2021 edition provided a platform for active interaction among key stakeholders including senior policymakers, academics, CEOs of global companies, heads of investment promotion agencies, and representatives of civil society.

Job Description

The Institutional Research Assistant provides essential administrative and operational support to the Office of Institutional Research. This role is designed to assist in the effective execution of institutional research and reporting functions, particularly those related to internal and external data submissions, documentation, stakeholder surveys, and performance monitoring. The role supports the University by ensuring the timely preparation, validation, and organisation of data and reports, enabling informed decision-making and compliance with regulatory requirements.

Main Tasks and Responsibilities:

Internal & External Reporting

  • Assist in collecting, formatting, and validating institutional data from various academic and administrative departments.
  • Support the preparation of standard reports, regulatory submissions, and ad-hoc data requests by compiling documentation and organising content.
  • Help maintain reporting calendars, data dictionaries, and template files to support reporting cycles to KHDA, CAA, CHEDS, and other bodies.
  • Coordinate internal workflows required for data verification and submission, including follow-ups and quality checks.
  • Conduct preliminary desk research and assist in compiling environmental data and benchmarking information to support institutional reports.
  • Support the preparation of simple data summaries, charts, and basic visualisations under the supervision of the Institutional Research Analyst.
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Provide administrative support in the production of reports and presentations related to timetabling, attendance, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Assist in the distribution, monitoring, and data entry of student, staff, and alumni feedback surveys.
  • Maintain internal databases, records, and filing systems for institutional research activities.
  • Support internal and external audit readiness by organising supporting documents and maintaining version control.
  • Uphold university protocols related to data protection, confidentiality, and ethical research practices.
  • Undertake training and skills development opportunities to build knowledge of institutional research practices and tools.
Requirements Qualifications Required:

1. Education

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Education, Statistics, Business Administration, Social Sciences, or a related field.
    Evidence: Copy of degree certificate and transcripts.
2. Professional Experience
  • Up to 1 year of experience in an administrative or data-related role, preferably in an educational or research setting.
    Evidence: Employment records, work portfolio, academic projects.
3. Technical Skills
  • Proficiency in Excel, Power BI, or Tableau, Word, and other MS Office applications.
    Evidence: Work samples and training certifications.
  • Exposure to data entry, file organisation, or survey tools is an advantage.
    Evidence: Project reports, tool usage in academic or work settings.

  • Basic understanding of collecting and compiling data through forms, templates, or surveys.
    Evidence: Experience in compliance reporting, training certificates.
3. Confidentiality and Data Protection
  • Awareness of the importance of protecting sensitive information and following ethical guidelines.
    Evidence: Interview discussion.
4. Communication and Presentation Support
  • Ability to summarise data, prepare basic charts, and support the formatting of reports.
    Evidence: Previous report sample, performance on assessment tasks.

Job Description

The Center for Smart Engineering Materials (CSEM), New York University Abu Dhabi, are inviting applications for a Kawader fellows in the areas of thermal, mechanical and electrical characterization of materials.

The candidate will work as a research fellow with the CSEM and the Smart Materials Lab (Naumov research group), nyuad.nyu.edu/en/research/faculty-research/naumov-group.html). The role will involve preparing, characterizing and testing new smart materials, at the intersection of materials science, chemistry, and engineering. A strong background in thermal or mechanical characterization of the surface and bulk properties of solids from either science (solid-state physics) or engineering (mechanical) is a requirement. The specific research projects will focus on both experimental and modeling aspects of the effects of temperature on mechanical properties, such as ability for elastic or plastic deformation. The candidate will conduct experiments related to assigned research projects, process the data, and prepare results for presentation in articles and conferences. Additionally, the candidate will submit biweekly reports on their research and participate in group seminars. Training students, such as capstone students or interns, and other researchers on techniques within their research domain is also part of the role. The candidate will collaborate with the staff of the Core Technology Platforms to receive training on available analytical techniques.

The candidate should have a background in mechanical engineering, solid-state physics or chemistry, or materials solid-state chemistry. Candidate with experimental skills and/or modelling experience with characterization of thermal and mechanical properties, and with a strong publication record in engineering or science will be given a priority.

The candidate will also work on individualized research projects under the supervision/mentorship of the supervisor.
