The Lab Specialist provides high-quality support to the RIC2D laboratories, ensuring seamless day-to-day operations and enabling world-class research. This includes advanced equipment management, conducting precise measurements, training staff, offering expert advice on analytical techniques, and ensuring compliance with Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) regulations.
The role requires a strong background in the science, applications, testing, and characterization of 2D materials, as well as expertise in clean-room operations, single-layer deposition equipment, and advanced microscopy and electrochemistry techniques. The Lab Specialist plays a key role in supporting the research and commercialization goals of RIC2D by promoting continuous improvement and operational excellence.
Laboratory Safety
- Ensure full compliance with Khalifa University EHS policies and guidelines.
- Conduct and review risk assessments and safety hazard reports.
- Proactively identify and address safety concerns and implement continuous safety improvement measures.
Laboratory Management
- Develop and enforce operational technical protocols and procedures for lab equipment and activities.
- Maintain an up-to-date inventory of equipment, consumables, and chemicals.
- Prepare operational logs and analytical reports to support data-driven decision-making.
- Identify and resolve repetitive equipment issues and implement preventive maintenance programs.
- Conduct effective and timely planning of gas resources management and re-supply to ensure un-interrupted lab operations.
Technical Support
- Maintain proficiency in clean-room operations, procedures, and best practices.
- Provide insights into macro-scale material fabrication, including additive manufacturing and 2D material-enhanced matrices, membranes, and composites.
- Conduct and support potentiation experiments, as well as operate and maintain electrochemical workstations.
- Assist faculty and researchers in designing and implementing experiments and work plans.
- Coordinate the installation, commissioning, and calibration of laboratory equipment.
- Provide technical know-how and consultative support to researchers and industrial collaborators.
- Contribute to the development of RIC2D’s scale-up and commercialization efforts in applied research.
- Apply standard methods for verification of measurement reliability and precision.
Management of Laboratory Resources
- Oversee procurement, storage, and management of laboratory resources, including gases, tubing, and fittings.
- Solicit and evaluate bids from vendors, ensuring optimal value and alignment with research needs.
- Support the reliability and integrity of laboratory assets by implementing timely preventive maintenance plans.
Research Services
- Showcase advanced experience in various thin-film deposition methods, vacuum, plasma and high-temperature, including Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD), Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD), PECVD, and Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD).
- Possess strong knowledge of electrochemistry principles and techniques, and their application to 2D materials applications in energy transfer and storage applications.Demonstrate expertise in common surface and structural characterization techniques for 2D materials, such as Raman spectroscopy, AFM, XRD, XPS, SEM.
- Develop expertise in tailoring and refining recipes for material synthesis and deposition.
- Facilitate the innovation and development of RIC2D research programs.
- Supervise research activities, ensuring reliable operation of equipment and accurate experimental setups.
- Collaborate with investigators and research personnel to address laboratory challenges and optimize equipment performance.
Other
- Adhere to the University’s information security and confidentiality policies, reporting breaches or risks as necessary.
- Demonstrate a strong commitment and practice to maintaining a safe and healthy work environment.
- Collaborate with other departments to enhance cross-functional support.

Qualifications
- Master's Degree in in a related discipline, PhD preferrable
- Advanced computational skills for data analysis, modelling and chemometrics is an advantage

NYUAD Water Research Center at New York University Abu Dhabi, seeks to recruit a research scientist to work on the development of membrane desalination to treat water from the Arabian Gulf feed sources and on the design and scale-up of low energy membranes for water purification, under the supervision of Professor Nidal Hilal, Director of the Water Research Center and Global Professor of Engineering.
The successful applicant will drive an exciting project on developing functional membrane materials, including nanostructured polymer membranes tailored to microfiltration, ultrafiltration, membrane distillation, nanofiltration and reverse osmosis. The candidate will employ advanced membrane fabrication techniques and characterization tools (SEM, TEM, DSC, TGA, BET, etc.) to establish fabrication-structure-property-performance relationships in novel materials for sustainable desalination and water treatment. The candidate will work in a multidisciplinary environment consisting of PhD-level scientists and engineers, graduate students and undergraduate students.
The successful applicant will manage projects and work closely with postdoctoral researchers, build deep technical knowledge and develop transferable solutions. He/she will participate in developing novel concepts and writing proposals. He/she will work towards solving complex problems with efficiency and creativity. He/she will be involved in writing reports, authoring publications, drafting patents and presenting results at conferences. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated knowledge of materials science and engineering, membrane fabrication techniques, membrane characterization tools and separation processes. He/she will be detail-oriented, well-organized and will possess excellent verbal and written communication skills. The successful candidate should be able to work independently and as part of a team.
Applicants must hold a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, Polymer Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field, and have a minimum of five years? experience as a Postdoctoral Research Associate . Excellent experimental and analytical skills relevant to the project (in particular membrane fabrication and characterization) are required. Candidates with demonstrated history of peer reviewed publications in a related area, along with prior expertise in materials science and analytical chemistry will be preferred.
This position will begin in March 2026 as a two-year contract, renewable depending on performance. The Center for Translational Medical Devices (CENTMED) at New York University Abu Dhabi is seeking a Research Scientist to work on Surface Chemistry of Implants and Fabrication of Polymer Medical Devices.
The successful candidate will collaborate with faculty and researchers to enhance implant surface chemistry, improving biocompatibility and osteointegration. Responsibilities include surface modification of implants via plasma treatment, silanization, and specialty coatings for corrosion resistance, as well as developing polymeric lubricious coatings for catheters to reduce vascular injury during trans-catheterization.
The role involves characterizing surface modifications using microscopy techniques such as SEM and AFM, mapping nanomechanical properties like adhesion, friction, Young's modulus, and surface free energy, and developing polymeric medical devices based on clinical needs. Experience in polymer processing techniques, including extrusion, molding, and additive manufacturing, is required. The candidate will prepare ISO/ASTM test specimens, estimate glass transition temperatures via DMA, and develop osteoconductive implants for skull base surgery.
Additional duties include quantifying biomolecule adsorption on coatings with Quartz Crystal Microbalance, developing sustainable orthotic devices, co-developing industry-partnered medical devices, and assisting in intellectual property filings. The candidate will also collaborate on preparing technology documentation for industry translation.

The candidate will employ advanced membrane fabrication techniques and characterization tools (SEM, TEM, DSC, TGA, BET, etc.) to establish fabrication-structure-property-performance relationships in novel materials for sustainable desalination and water treatment. The candidate will work in a multidisciplinary environment consisting of PhD-level scientists and engineers, graduate students and undergraduate students. The successful applicant will manage projects and work closely with postdoctoral researchers, build deep technical knowledge and develop transferable solutions. He/she will participate in developing novel concepts and writing proposals. He/she will work towards solving complex problems with efficiency and creativity. He/she will be involved in writing reports, authoring publications, drafting patents and presenting results at conferences. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated knowledge of materials science and engineering, membrane fabrication techniques, membrane characterization tools and separation processes. He/she will be detail-oriented, well-organized and will possess excellent verbal and written communication skills. The successful candidate should be able to work independently and as part of a team. Applicants must hold a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, Polymer Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field, and have a minimum of five years? experience as a Postdoctoral Research Associate . Excellent experimental and analytical skills relevant to the project (in particular membrane fabrication and characterization) are required. Candidates with demonstrated history of peer reviewed publications in a related area, along with prior expertise in materials science and analytical chemistry will be preferred. This position will begin in March 2026 as a two-year contract, renewable depending on performance.
